The only hospice of the Key West area is closing its doors due to financial complications, which was made even worse by hurricane Irma, the shutdown will leave 10 people without their full-time job and 12 without their part-time job. According to the article, hospice is "a form of palliative care where patients with life-limiting illness are treated for their symptoms but they are not under a treatment meant to cure them". This is a big problem for the region because the only other hospice provider is two hours away by car, 91 miles away. The main people affected by this are the elders under hospice care, who will probaly have to relocate.

  • Why should everyone have a lawyer except abused and neglected kids?
Article link: http://bit.ly/2BqtNZr
The article talks about children in Florida that are victims of abuse, abandonment and neglect; and they, unlike other people, do not receive a lawyer for their cases, which seemns unfair, because if that same children would have been in court because of a delinquency charge, he would have received a lawyer. So there is a proposal called proposal 40 to fix this. The problem with this situation is that, because these children do not have lawyers, they have a disadvantage in the courtroom, as it is stated in the article: " Children need an attorney to protect and advance their interests in court, provide legal counsel and help them understand the process and feel empowered. The confidential attorney client priviledge also allows children to feel safe sharing information with attorneys that otherwise may go unvoiced". This situation is especially a problem for the 27,000 chidren that are victims of abuse in Florida, but also for the state, as they would save $39 million dollars in direct foster care.

  • Working Americans are using less healthcare but paying more for it, study says
Article link: http://bit.ly/2FaOvi5
According to a study made by HCCI from 2012 to 2016, it was discovered that working Americans paid more for their healthcare but used it less, this is due to price hikes in brand name prescription drugs, despite a decreasing trend of its use, as well as emergency room visits, which rose up by 31% to $1,917 for a non overnight visit. This is a very big problem because it is costing American workers an increasing part of their paycheck, even though they are using the service less than ever before. The main demographic suffering this problem are workers younger than the age of 65

  • Trump tax cut might keep the cost of craft beer down - or put it out of business
Article link: http://bit.ly/2DGE0WJ
The tax cut that Trump announced on december 2017 may benefit draft beer brewers, as they have to pay almost half in tax for each barrel they produce, but this also benefits large brewers, as they will also save a lot of money. This is a problem because this can lead to big brewers buying the small ones, or undercutting them to take them out of business, which is why this is a problem for the draft breweries

  1. I think that the way healthcare costs are rising is ridiculous. Why should a person pay more for something when they are using less of it? Also, I was unaware of the bill allowing the water quality in Florida to be decreased. Water is an essential of life, decreasing its quality will lead to many health concerns across the state. What is the benefit of this law passing?

  2. Andres, you chose great articles, and came up with good observations. I was unaware of most of this information. However, I don’t think Trump’s tax cut will be harmful for craft breweries. Taxes are also a huge burden for small business, so reducing this cost will allow small brewers to expand. Also, the demand for Craft beer is somewhat inelastic because people are willing to pay more. That’s just my opinion and keep up the good work.
